An after image is a non-specific term that refers to an image continuing to appear in ones vision after the exposure to the original image has ceased. An after image may be a normal phenomenon (physiological after image) or may be pathological (palinopsia). It’s a type of optical illusion in which an image continues to appear in your minds eye after your eyes have stopped directly looking at said image.
A common physiological afterimage is the dim area that seems to float before one’s eyes after briefly looking into a light source, ex. Looking at a camera flash.
There are two major types of after images: Positive after image and negative after images. In some instances, the colors of the original stimulus are retained, considered a positive after image. In other cases, the colors may be reversed, known as a negative after image.
Scientific Research has shown there are a numerous ways to increase the likelihood of experiencing an after image, engraving it in your memory. One way being prolonged exposure to a colored stimulus (or lack of color black & white after images) Staring at an image in a book for 60 seconds before turning to stare at a blank, light colored wall can produce this kind of after image. The prolonged exposure to a colored (or non colored) stimulus often results in a negative after image. In a way, it’s like engraving that image into your brains “hard drive” even after you’ve stopped looking at it.
The exact mechanisms behind positive afterimages are not well understood because of the complexity of the brain, although researchers believe that the phenomenon might be related to retinal inertia. The original image stimulates nerve impulses, and these impulses continue for a small window of time after you close your eyes or look away from the scene (in my case, the paintings). The cells in the retina take some time to respond to light, and once the cells have been excited it takes some time for that response to stop. While positive after images happen quite frequently we are generally unaware of them because they are so brief, often lasting as little as 500 milliseconds.
Color is first encoded at the level of the photoreceptors in each eye. There are 3 kinds of color sensitive photoreceptors in each person’s eye. Their job is to convert the incoming light into electrical signals that the rest of the brain can use.
We have 3 types of cones maximally sensitive to red, green and blue. A red stimulus will tend to activate mainly, but not exclusively, the red photoreceptors, green lights and cones. The output of these receptors is converted in the retina into an opponency process. In this process the outlook of the eye, the one million fibers making up the optic nerve, encodes color in 3 separate channels, one for intensity and two for color.
Visual perception involves context. In both time and space, we are especially sensitive to variation. Sensitivity to variation in time is important because many of the features of the visual world that move have extraordinary importance. Sensitivity to variation in space makes it easy to discern the edges of things.
In color, there is life. To understand this power is living color could very well be the most precious experience we as humans take for granted. We interpret life as much through color as we do shape, texture and sound. The truth is, the power of color is the very essence of life.
Our most important energy source is light, and the entire spectrum of color is derived from light. Sunlight which contains wavelengths consist of the entire electromagnetic spectrum that we depend on to exist on this plane.
Light flows through our eyes and triggers hormone production, which influences our entire complex biochemical system. This system then affects our being and light does not travel alone, light, like us travels with many other energies. We know that each color found in the visible light spectrum has its own wavelength and its own frequency, which produces a specific energy and has a nutritive effect.
Light is the only energy we can see and we see it in the form of color. Our bodies absorb color energy through the vibration color gives off. All of our organs, body systems and functions are connected to out main energy centers (also known as the 7 chakras) Through color, we receive all the energies we need to maintain a healthy mind body and soul. The National institute of Mental Health has done studies showing that mental health, behavior and efficiency in life depends on normal color balance. When something’s wrong, or is out of balance we can strengthen our energy centers through the conscious use of color.
Personal experience:In this color study, prior to beginning this series of paintings, I was personally experiencing blocks in my throat chakra (blue) and root chakra (red) so through my years of using painting as an antidepressant, I chose those two combinations to strengthen the blocked chakras, and see where it would lead to my mental and physical health.
Healing properties in Pure Red.
Red is called “the great energizer” and “the father of vitality”. Red is warm, vital heating. It loosens, opens up clogs, releases stiffness and constrictions. Red is the first visible color we see after infrared band is passed. Red is thermal, heating, warming, yang and positive. It has many tendencies including the promotion of cellular growth and activity stimulating the will aspect corresponding to our life source or circulatory system. Red links with and stimulates the root chakra, at the base of the spine, causing the adrenal glands to release adrenalin. This results in greater strength. Red causes hemoglobin to multiply, thus increasing energy and raising body temperature. It is excellent for people with anemia such as myself, and anyone with a blood related condition. The color red connects us to our physical body.
Healing properties of light blue, or just blue in general.
Dr. Edwin Babbitt, in his classic, “The principles of light and color”, state’s that “the blue ray is one of the greatest antiseptics in the world. Blue is cooling, electric, astringent. It helps bleeding, decreases fevers and cures soar throats. Blue can have a sedative effect as expressed in the popular term “feeling blue”, but contrary to the statement, it’s a very positive color indicating loyalty and reliability.
Blue, on the other hand is also at the opposite end of the visible spectrum and its electric cooling yin, a negative (making the blue and red combo the perfect ying & yang, which also, engraves an after image in the viewer’s eye.
Blue links with and stimulate the throat chakra. The throat chakra is often referenced as the “power center” and the greatest center in the body because it is the primary center of expression and communication, through speech. Blue can be used for ant ailments associated with speech, communication and or the throat. This is a mentally relaxing color. Ideal for sleep problems and hyper active children. It connects us to holistic thought and gives us wisdom and clarity enhancing communication and speech.
Color therapy: Acne- Red & Blue.
Alternating red and blue light has been used to clear severe cases of acne. Blue light attacks the acne bacteria and the Red light stimulates collagen and elastin in the skin.
Dr. Kate Baldwin:
“ For about six years I have given close attention to the actions of color in restoring body functions and am perfectly honest in saying that, after nearly 37 yeats of active hospital and private practice in medicine and surgery, I can produce quicker and more accurate results with color than with any or all other methods combined- and with less strain on the patient.”
The use of color to heal has ancient roots. Native cultures discovered that the color of plants often determined their healing qualities. Long before modern technology, healers discovered that light coming through colored fabric or colored glass had the ability to speed healing. Color is the active ingredient in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in our food.
